FANTASTIC WOMEN (2018)

a performance by Bauwien van der Meer with music composed by 10 female composers

Beloven [Georgia Nicolaou] – Commissioned by November Music

In the man-dominated world that we are living in, the superficially accepted job of a prostitute might seem pleasant, enjoyable and socially embraceable. What happens when it comes to the violation of the woman’s inner world, to the lost pieces of that being that cannot return? They might have been already washed out, diffused, as the ashes dissolve in the North Sea water.

Bauwien van der Meer – soprano

Caecilia Boschman – piano

Jorinde Keesmaat – director

Desirée van Gelderen – light design

Sammy van den Heuvel – decor, costumes

Robin de Bruijn – dramaturgy

a Music Theatre performance

Voice: Nina Künzel

Actors: Nadira Jansen, Sarah Tabrizi, Filomena Dias, Soraya Garcia, Johan den Hartog

Ensemble: AKOM Ensemble directed by Roberto Beltrán Zavala

A mini abstract opera centered on the multiple sides of the same character. A game between the perception or even deception of the I and the constitution of the self as a fragmented, constantly changing being. It is five senses, five characters, five colors; different faces of her own self, all interfering into her most intimate thoughts.

TEXT

An adaptation of ‘Leugenbeeld’, a collection of Poems by Jan Nieuwenhuis

Do I see those same blue eyes,

The same face, deceived

By the sight of another –

– I –

– see a complete myself

At distance in the mirror

A clearly defined hushed lie.

Am I who I am

When I smell my own smell

You, your perfume

For months I have not

Smelled it

Fills me silently

With memories.

We are both here.

Overcooked to a pulp.

A residue of mingled tastes

In a cracked soil

From which I exhaust myself,

Find myself,

And oppress myself.

How you touch me where I don’t know myself

Your fingers push

How outside becomes inside

How we become not one or two

How my body merges, disappears,

Feeling nothing/Stop Feeling.

For months I’ve been listening to what resounds in me. Slamming doors and fucking neighbors are also mine from now on. I’ve deteriorated into the worst kind of music theatre. I only hear myself in a way I didn’t know I existed as: a micro polyphonic cluster. I don’t want to be anything else.

Singing free all those like-minded voices until I am nothing more than sound.
